The Cold Spring Silver Springers won their opening game of the 2016 MSMABA State Tournament, defeating the #14 seed LeCenter Braves 11-1 in five innings in Urbank on Saturday afternoon. The victory puts the Silvers in the AA bracket for the rest of the tournament. The offense pounded out 12 hits in the game, the defense committed no errors, and Andy Auger pitched great on the mound to pick up the win. He allowed one run on three hits, one walk, and struck out three over five innings of work.
LeCenter grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Cold Spring responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Greg Terres walked and then stole second; Greg Bemboom singled Terres to third and then stole second; Mike Arnold doubled home Terres and Bemboom; and Todd Geislinger homered, his second of the season, to score Arnold and make the score 4-1. The Silvers added another run in the bottom of the second when Brent Schloe singled, Todd Van Erp singled, Terres singled, and Schloe scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Steve Huls. Cold Spring then blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Derek Falde singled and later advanced on a groundout; Schloe singled to score Falde; Van Erp reached on an error; Terres reached on an error to fill the bases; Huls singled home Schloe and Van Erp; Bembbom singled home Terres; and Arnold singled home Huls. The Silvers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run after Falde walked, Tim Martin singled, Auger walked to load the bases, and Schloe was hit by a pitch to score Falde. The game was ended via the 10-run rule, with Cold Spring on top 11-1.
